Every coworking space looks good in photos. The difference shows up when you actually sit down to work. Before you commit to any plan, visit in person and run through this checklist.

1. Location and travel time

How long will it take you to get there at your usual time? A space close to home or on your regular route makes it much easier to show up every day.

2. Internet speed

Run a speed test on your own laptop. Then join a quick video call. Fast, stable internet is the single most important thing a workspace provides.

3. Power backup

Ask what happens during load-shedding. Does the backup cover the WiFi, lights and air conditioning?

4. Opening hours

Check that the hours match the way you work. If your clients are in another time zone, you may need early mornings, late nights or 24-hour access.

5. Comfort

Sit in the chair for a while. Check the desk height, the lighting and the temperature. You’ll be there for hours at a time.

6. Noise levels

Is it quiet enough to focus? Where do people take calls?

7. What’s included in the price

Ask exactly what’s included: tea and coffee, printing, community events. Hidden extras can change the real cost.

8. Flexibility

Can you start with a day pass? Can you switch plans later? Avoid long commitments until you’re sure.

9. Security

Is access controlled? Is it safe to leave your things while you take a break?

10. The community

Who else works there? A good community brings referrals, ideas and friendships.

Questions to ask the team

  • What exactly is included in each plan?
  • What are the hours, and are there shifts?
  • Can I start with a day pass?
  • What happens during load-shedding?
  • How are community events run, and how often?
  • How do I pay, and what is the notice period?

What to bring to your visit

Bring your laptop so you can test the internet yourself, and headphones if you want to try a quick call. Think about how many days you’ll come in and which hours you’ll work, so the team can recommend the right plan.

How to compare spaces fairly

Visit at the time of day you’d normally work, not just when it’s convenient. A space that’s perfect at noon may be very different at 9 pm. Write down your score for each of the ten points above, add the price, and compare like for like.
